Our Speaker

Justin Copp will be hosting our tour of Brunswick Steel.  He is one of three owners of the company.  Justin began the production floor but eventually moved in to sales, where he advanced to sales management and general management. He was recently promoted to his current position as General Manager and is in his twenty third year with the company.  He is a married father of three and a graduate of St. Paul's High School.

The Presentation

Brunswick Steel is a 2nd generation family business located in Manitoba. They are a general line steel service centre supplying mainly carbon material to the Manitoba market.  Their primary customer segments include structural fabrication, OEMs, welding shops and machine shops. Their end use customers are primarily in agriculture, transportation, oil & gas, mining and construction.  In addition to ‘as-is’ supply, they also offer processing services including: Fiber & CO2 laser cutting, press braking, plasma and flame cutting, and saw cutting and ring rolling.  There will be an evening shift working therefore safety glasses and hardhats will be required.  If you have either please bring them with you; it will help our hosts and ensure everyone gets to go on the tour.

Our Speaker

Richard Lawrence is the GE TRDC Engineering and site manager at the GE-owned / StandardAero-operated facility located at the JR International Airport.  After graduation, Richard worked in fan development/engineering/sales at Alphair Ventilating Systems (now Howden Fan).  In 2006 he moved to become a Facility Engineer at StandardAero.  In 2011 GE approached StandardAero to design and manage building of the GE Testing Research and Development Centre (TRDC) at J R International Airport, working in conjunction with engineers at General Electric in Cincinnati, Ohio.  After working in design and project management roles for the GE9X $26M facility upgrade in 2017, Richard became the Site Operations Manager.


The Presentation

StandardAero performs aircraft engine certification testing for General Electric at the James Richardson International Airport.  An overview of the upgrades that have been implemented to accommodate the GE9X engine certification will be described .  After the presentation, a tour of the GE TRDC facility will be provided.  Government photo ID (eg. Driver’s license or Passport) will be required for entrance to the tour.  If you wish to go inside the exhaust stack (and you probably should) you must wear safety shoes.  Dress for the weather as parts of the tour will be outside. Car pools will be required to the site and will be determined after the presentation.


Parking
Parking is available at the front of 1855 Sargent as well as on the street and across the street at 1844 Sargent.  Car pools will need to be formed for the trip to the testing facility tour for security reasons, and will be determined after the presentation.

Our Speaker

Cameron Huber (P.Eng) is the Manager for Research and Training at MPI’s new JW Zacharias Physical Damage Research Centre.  He has many years of experience in process engineering and process excellence with a black belt in Six Sigma.  Cameron is currently focused on working with his team at MPI on research into damageability and reparability of vehicles as well as autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems.

Company Description

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) is a not-for-profit Crown Corporation that has provided basic automobile coverage since 1971.  With the new research centre MPI is able to work very closely with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), academic institutions and the automotive repair industry; collaborating on research projects initiatives and training on new vehicle repair techniques, equipment and tooling.  Welding certifications are also performed at the research centre which is a requirement towards the necessary Gold Class I-CAR status.   On the global scale, MPI is part of RCAR; an international body of automotive research centres, whose primary goal is to reduce the human and economic costs of motor vehicle losses.
