 1.         The Presentation

Continuous improvement (CI) is one of the three main pillars of a quality management system, and has been widely implemented in industries. In this brief presentation, after the basic ideas, the CI processes and approaches, e.g. PDCA, A3, DMAIC, 8D, etc., are reviewed. Then, the operation performance of manufacturing systems, particularly on their production throughput, is addressed in the talk. The improvement management is also talked about at the end. The presentation discussion is on the in-depth understanding of the states of complex manufacturing systems for bottleneck identification. The processes and approaches introduced in the presentation are based on the speaker’s hands-on experience in the auto industry, and can be more applicable to volume production.

2.         Our Speaker

Dr. Herman Tang is an associate professor with the School of Engineering at Eastern Michigan University. Before joining EMU in 2015, Dr. Tang was a lead engineering specialist in Manufacturing Engineering of FCA (now Stellantis) and had worked there for over 16 years. His experiences and interests concern the fields of mechanical, manufacturing, and quality engineering, among others. He also serves as an associate editor and reviewer for several scholarly journals and conferences, and as a panelist for the National Science Foundation. Dr. Tang has published four technical books recently, two of them by SAE. Dr. Tang earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tianjin University, and MBA in Industrial Management from Baker College. The Presentation

Women are underrepresented in the engineering profession at a rate of nearly 10:1 when compared to their male counterparts. This poses a problem for a profession whose goal is to provide innovative and inclusive solutions that work for all people. This study was undertaken to examine women’s career experiences in the engineering workplace in Manitoba.  Through their stories, career persistence factors became more clear and concrete recommendations were developed.

Our Speaker

After completing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1999, Kathryn began her career at Standard Aero as a T56 Service Engineer.  This role took her around the world inspecting gas turbine engines and helped solidify her love of aerospace.  In her 13 years at Standard Aero, Kathryn gained experience in both technical and engineering leadership roles while also completing an MBA.

For the last 8 years, Kathryn has been the Aero-Engine Test and Advanced Digital Manufacturing Engineer-in-Residence and Industry Partnerships Facilitator for the Price Faculty of Engineering.  In these roles, she develops and delivers industry related courses (focused on Applied Aerospace Instrumentation, Project Management, and Career Design), provides mentorship to students, and acts as a facilitator to help strengthen collaborations between the University and Manitoba’s various industry sectors.

Kathryn is passionate about women in engineering and aerospace and volunteers on several committees promoting these professions.  She is one of the founders and coordinators of the Women in Engineering & Geoscience Mentorship Program that aims to create a community of women in engineering and geoscience – from undergraduate students to seasoned professionals.  In 2020, Kathryn completed a Master’s of Science in Biosystems Engineering where her research focused on understanding career persistence of women in the engineering workforce.
