Our Speaker

Tim Giesbrecht is the Director of Engineering and Quality at Herd, having started in September 2015 He has a degree in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Asper and is currently working on a Lean Greenbelt. He leads an engineering team that is responsible for product design, manufacturing support, technical service and quality. The engineering team has recently been developing new products including a lighter, more fuel efficient aluminum protection bumper and a lift assist feature on all aluminum bumpers to improve operator ergonomics, and on-shoring a line of stainless steel grill guards.

Company Description

Herd North America Inc. is a locally owned company specializing in the production and distribution of vehicle protection guards for commercial transport trucks and working-class pickup trucks. Herd’ engineering team designs each model and application in-house, which amounts to hundreds of applications and tens of thousands of configurations.

PPE

There may be an evening shift working during the tour, if so, hearing protection, safety glasses and steel toes are required. Ear plugs and safety glasses will be provided and protective shoe caps are available for those who don’t have steel toed shoes.

Our Speakers


Jared Kozub has extensive background as a Mechanical Design Engineer in R&D and Product Development in manufacturing industry. Applying this experience to his passion for 3D printing and additive manufacturing results in optimal development solutions for clients.
Alan Rattan is a design engineer at Precision ADM, creating new product development and customer applications. He has a keen interest in automation and robotics, and has years of experience working in R&D and product development. Alan is presently involved in engineering efforts to leverage advanced manufacturing technology in developing complete solutions for customers in various industries.

The Tour


Precision ADM Inc. (PADM) is the first start-up company currently wholly owned by the Orthopaedic Innovation Centre. PADM was incorporated May 11, 2015 and has since operated out of the OIC facilities. PADM identifies, develops, and manufactures high value components and device applications for the medical, aerospace, energy and industrial sectors. The medical industry is moving towards patient specific devices to offer better, more personalized therapies. The aerospace industry is innovating towards lighter and more fuel efficient aircraft while developing new components with reduced, expedited supply chain. Our solution to our clients is to provide digital manufacturing design and/or manufacturing solutions to make their products more efficient and functional than those made with conventional manufacturing methods.

Michael Thomlinson, P. Eng. is the Manager of Engineering and Technical Services at the Industrial Technology Centre. Michael received his MSc in Mechanical Engineering in 1994 and has been with the ITC since April 2004.

The Tour

The Industrial Technology Centre (ITC) is a Special Operating Agency (SOA) of Manitoba Growth, Enterprise and Trade.  Established in 1979 by the Province of Manitoba, ITC was reconstituted as an SOA in 1996.  ITC’s mandate is to support technology based economic development in Manitoba.

Our Speakers


Emerich Kovacs III is an Electrical Engineering student, that started in Space Systems with a 16 month internship at Magellan in May of 2014, and is working there again this summer performing unit level hardware testing for RCM and providing engineering support for R&D projects.
Aimee Carvey is a 4th year Mechanical Engineering student, specializing in aerospace. Last summer she had a four month work term at Magellan in the Space Department providing support to the Product Assurance team for the RCM project, and this summer is on a four month work term providing engineering support to the Defense Department.

Presentation and Tour


Magellan Aerospace is a global aerospace company that designs, engineers and manufactures aeroengine and aerostructure assemblies and components for aerospace markets, advanced products for military and space markets, industrial power generation, and specialty products. The Winnipeg operation was established in 1930 (formerly Bristol Aerospace) and became an operating division of Magellan Aerospace Corporation in 1997. The most recent addition to the Winnipeg division is the Advanced Satellite Integration Facility.

The event will include a short presentation on Magellan Aerospace and the tour protocols, followed by tours of the various satellite testing and manufacturing facilities, including clean and vibe rooms, and an up close look at the 3 RCM (RADARSAT Constellation Mission) bus modules currently in production.

Registration is required in advance, before May 15th, and limited to 20 people. Registrants must provide Citizenship and Employer information, and must bring photo ID for admittance to Magellan. Long pants and closed toed shoes are required for entry to the clean room.

Our Speaker


Mike Morrison, P. Eng. is the Director of Process Engineering at Monarch Industries. He started at Monarch in April, 1995, and has held positions in Design & Manufacturing Engineering and Production Management. Mike graduated University of Manitoba in 1994 with a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, and was certified as a Blackbelt in Lean Manufacturing in 2008. Mike was born and raised in Winnipeg.

The Tour


Founded in 1935, Monarch Industries is a privately owned, vertically integrated manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders and custom iron castings. These products are marketed globally to the Mobile, Ag, and Industrial markets through the Original Equipment, Distribution and Retail channels they serve. Employing over 500 people, Monarch’s corporate office is located in Winnipeg. With a foundry in Winkler, and a distribution center in Kansas City, Missouri, Monarch has positioned itself to service the needs of their customers’ diverse requirements.

Our Speaker


Mr. John Yestrau, P. Eng. has been involved in various design and manufacturing positions at Boeing Winnipeg since 1996.
John has been a member of SAE Manitoba since 1997, and was the captain of the 1998 Formula SAE racecar design competition.

The Tour


Boeing Winnipeg is one of the largest aerospace composite manufacturers in Canada.
The company employs over 1,400 people at two locations in the city where nearly 1,000 end item composite parts and assemblies for Boeing Commercial Airplanes are produced.
Major products include wing to body fairings, engine strut fairings, landing gear doors and the engine inlet inner barrel of the new 737 MAX airplane.
Boeing Winnipeg is also responsible for designing and manufacturing many parts for the innovative 787 Dreamliner.

Our Speaker

Mr. Wayne Schellekens, P. Eng. has been involved in electronics and embedded systems design and development since 1990.  Before working at Holley, Wayne worked for IMRIS, Micropilot, Arrista Technologies, Nortel, BNI and AECL.  Wayne has also been involved with the student SAE teams in the past and enjoys racing formula cars in Gimli.

Mr. Fred Oberbuchner, P. Eng. has been involved in the aftermarket automotive electronics for over 25 years.  Before being acquired by Holley, FJO Enterprises provided aftermarket racing electronics to several companies under various brands.

We will be presenting the EFI engine management unit and our Digital Dash display products, and show how you can create custom advanced engine control solutions.

The Tour

Holley Performance Products (Canada) designs and manufactures electronics for the automotive performance aftermarket industry.  The Winnipeg location works in conjunction with head office in Bowling Green, Kentucky to deliver quality engine control units, dash display devices, components and other electronic products to the racing industry.
