Development Hours for “Informal Activity”
Auto racing is an intense crucible that tests a vehicle's capabilities,
but even more it tests the driver's abilities and trust in that vehicle.
Adjusting the vehicle to the driver through testing can yield huge reductions
in lap times, even if the engineering principles suggest the opposite. But,
once the race has started, it's now imperative that the driver adjusts to the
vehicle they have to extract the best result. When the vehicle and driver are
in harmony, they tend to win. We will review these complex dynamics in the
context of kart racing.
After the presentation, we will apply the
lessons in a one-hour Le Mans-style kart race at Speedworld! Teams assigned to
each kart will race against each other to complete as many laps as possible
before time runs out!
Teams will be a mix
of SAE students, professional SAE members, and other guests. This is a great
networking opportunity for students and professionals alike!
Corey Dyck is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of
Manitoba. While working in the heavy-duty transit industry, he's pursued
amateur motorsports as a passion for 18 years now. Corey has won a few Canadian
National Championships and has placed in the top 10 in US National competitions
in his chosen sport of autocross. He's created, refined, and instructed at a
local autocross racing school that has helped hundreds of drivers reach their
personal goals in amateur motorsports over the past 16 years.
SAE Manitoba would like to recognize the
world-class UMSAE student organization here in Manitoba. Together, they form
one of the largest student member groups in the world. This event celebrates
their participation in SAE, their contribution to the industry, and their role
in the development of the engineering function in society, and gives them a
networking opportunity with professional SAE MB members. It also gives the
professional members a chance to show their support for the students by
contributing to this event.
Please go to saemanitoba.org/register
to register electronically. This event is limited to 40 racing participants. If
more than 40 racing participants are registered, a waiting list will be created
in order of registration.
A valid driver’s license is required to
participate in the Speedworld portion of the event.
