Ford F-150 Event

April 13, 2015
Written by: Irene Wasilewski
Ford recently unveiled their latest F150 model which highlights the Ford’s innovations in design and manufacturing.
Customers had requested a truck that would do more while using less fuel. The latest model boasts a high strength steel frame and an aluminum alloy body that led to approximately 700 pounds in weight reduction. The significant weight savings allows:
  • Better braking
  • Increased towing capacity
  • Increased payload capacity
  • Improved handling
  • Faster acceleration
  • Up to 20% better fuel economy ratings
Within 4 weeks Ford revised their manufacturing line to build the new model. This included 500 robots and all new stamping and assembly equipment.
Ford engineers had to look at advanced technologies for assembly since MIG welding and spot welding aluminum has many technical challenges. They turned to mechanical spot joining technologies such as:
  • Self-piercing rivets
    • Tested 2 million rivets before production as they expect to use 1.5 billion rivets per year
  • High strength adhesive
  • Clinching
  • Flow drills screws
    • Screws that are installed at high speed that extrudes the material before joining the pieces together
  • Laser welding
Ford also used new advances in extruding, hydroforming and stamping for the forming operations.
This event was a screening at the University of Manitoba of a presentation originally done for the SAE Detroit section.

Harley-Davidson Street and LiveWire Event

Harley-Davidson Street and LiveWire Event

March 27, 2015
Written by: Irene Wasilewski

Harley-Davidson is the iconic motorcycle company started in 1903 and has a long history of innovation. They employ over 6400 employees with corporate headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is a global company with seven manufacturing plants in countries such as Brazil and India. They are a top seller in new markets such as young adults, women, African Americans and Hispanics. Harley-Davidson recently launched two new motorcycle models – Street and LiveWire.
Street
The Street is a new model meant for urban environments and young and new riders. It has a short wheel base, is nimble and easy to turn. It has a low, smooth, linear power.
It was launched in two facilities at the same time – in Bawal, India and Kansas City, USA.
LiveWire
The LiveWire is Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle. Prototypes are currently touring through the USA. This model had a 30% decrease in the time to market versus other models. LiveWire had a focus on engineering and styling. Its frame boasts two ‘firsts’ for Harley-Davidson – it is cast aluminum and at only 14 pounds, it is the lightest frame they have ever built. Yet LiveWire maintains the look, sound and feel that are tenets for Harley-Davidson. It can go from 0-60 mph in less than 40 seconds.
The event was a screening of a presentation originally done for the SAE Milwaukee chapter held at the University of Manitoba.

All New Ford F150 Vehicle Development Event

SAE Manitoba invites you to a technical presentation:
All New Ford F150 Vehicle Development Event
When:              7:00 PM, Thursday, February 26, 2015
Cost:                Free
APEGM CPD:   APEGM members credit 2 Professional Development Hours for "Informal Activity"
The Presentation
We will be showing a video shot by the SAE Detroit Section of a Technical Presentation from Ford regarding the development of the all new Ford F150 truck. In the new model, Ford engineered the vehicle to be 700 lbs lighter, largely due the use of high strength steel in the frame and high strength aluminum in the body. This resulted in an increased power to weight ratio, and helped Ford achieve a key goal with this project that consumers demanded - increased fuel efficiency without sacrificing power. The presentation discusses the history of the project, the testing programs and key aspects of the new model. It also discusses the specifics about the aluminum design changes from the grades used, to fastening and forming technologies.
Parking
Parking is available throughout the University of Manitoba's Fort Garry campus. Parking is generally free at the time of this presentation.  The E and S-lots in particular are recommended.
Registration
There will be no light supper or drinks provided, and no cost for this presentation.  Registration will not be required.
We hope to see you there.  Thanks,
