Gerdau Ameristeel
Gerdau was founded in Brazil in
1901 and is one of the largest steel manufacturers in the world. It produces
around 11.5M metric tons of steel product annually and employs over 30,000
people across 7 countries within North and South America (Canada included). Gerdau’s
steel products can be found in various applications, from the elevator shafts
of metropolitan skyscrapers to rail systems covering vast distances.
The Tour
 Gerdau’s Selkirk facility
consists of a central mill where long steel is produced for use in the
automotive and construction industries. The steel starts this production
lifecycle as scrap metal, which is then melted in the ladle furnace, cast into
billets, sent through the reheating furnace, rolled, and finished. This
facility is unique within the province of Manitoba and is Gerdau’s most
expansive facility across Canada as well, producing square, round, and flat
billets, as well as track shoes and other specific products. On this tour,
visitors will pass through the rolling mill and see the newly installed robotic
cell within, which aids in the processing of the long steel billets.
 Please note that all
attendees must provide their own safety glasses and steel-toed boots to enter
the facility. Hard hats will be
provided at the mill.
